Keeping system performance at its best is always important, especially when it comes business computers.

One of the biggest culprits of performance loss is hard drive fragmentation.  Microsoft knows this, so Windows has a built-in disk defragmentation utility.  While the built-in utility helps restore lost performance due to drive fragmentation, there are other defragmentation utilities available that do a little better job.  One such utility is Smart Defrag from IOBits.  Smart Defrag is free and can be downloaded from CNET for free here.

Another useful built-in tool is Disk Cleanup.  It is always a good idea to run the Disk Cleanup utility before running a Disk Defragmentor utility.  The Disk Clean up utility looks at your computer for old files and can compress them to help save space.  It will also cleanup your temporary files that aren’t needed, like your web browser files, Recycle Bin and more.  Running this utility (or one like it) can free up anywhere from a couple of Meg to hundreds of Meg of hard drive space.

After the cleanup utility has completed, run the Disk Defragmentation utility to optimize the order of files on your hard drive for faster access.  That will help increase Windows performance.
